Cheapest Months to Fly From Houston to Cancún
Cancún is Houston's go-to beach for a reason: short flight, big choice of hotels, and fares that stay low if you avoid the crowds. Here's when to go for the best value — and why the cheapest month isn't always the obvious one.
The cheap months
Fares from IAH to CUN are generally lowest in:
- Late August – early October — hurricane season keeps prices down (more on that below).
- January (after New Year) — a brief dip before spring break demand.
- May — after spring break, before summer family travel.
The most expensive windows are spring break (March), Christmas/New Year, and July.
The hurricane-season tradeoff
September is statistically the cheapest month — and the peak of hurricane season. That doesn't mean a ruined trip; most days are still sunny. But:
- Buy refundable or travel-insured bookings.
- Watch the forecast the week before you fly.
- Build a small buffer in your budget for flexibility.
If you'd rather not gamble, early December and May are the sweet spots — good weather, lower prices.
Price the trip, not just the flight
A cheap September fare can be undone by peak hotel rates during a local festival. Check the all-in cost for your dates:

Quick tips
- Fly mid-week. Tuesday/Wednesday departures beat weekend ones.
- Be flexible by a few days. TripBudget scans nearby departure dates for the cheapest window automatically.
- Set a price alert so you book when it actually drops, not when you happen to look.
Time it right and a week in Cancún from Houston can come in well under most people's guess.
