Best Time to Visit Cancún on a Budget (Month-by-Month Breakdown)

Timing your Cancún trip right can save you $300–$600 on flights alone and cut hotel rates nearly in half. Here's the honest month-by-month breakdown.

The short version

Peak season: December through April

This is when everyone wants to go. Weather is near-perfect — sunny, low humidity, temperatures in the low 80s°F. Spring break (late Feb through mid-April) is the busiest and most expensive window. New Year's week is peak pricing for hotels.

Expect to pay: Flights from major US hubs $350–$600 round-trip. Hotels $150–$400/night for beachfront.

If your dates are flexible, mid-January through mid-February is the sweet spot — weather is excellent and it's between the holiday surge and spring break madness.

Shoulder season: May and November

May is criminally underrated. The Easter rush is gone, flights drop significantly, and the weather is genuinely beautiful — warm, mostly sunny, minimal rain. Hotel prices fall 30–50% from peak.

November is similar: post-hurricane season, before the December holiday surge. Some resorts run early-bird promotions.

Expect to pay: Flights $200–$380 round-trip. Hotels $80–$200/night.

Low season: June through October (hurricane season)

This is when prices hit rock bottom — but for a reason. June and July aren't bad: warm, some afternoon showers, still very affordable. August through mid-October is hurricane season in earnest. September is the highest-risk month; the most impactful Atlantic hurricanes historically occur in September.

If you go during hurricane season, buy travel insurance. Full stop.

Expect to pay: Flights $150–$280 round-trip. Hotels $50–$130/night.

Best months for budget travelers

  1. November — Best value overall: great weather, low prices, small crowds
  2. May — Excellent value, hot but pleasant, lowest crowd density
  3. Late January / early February — Best weather-to-price ratio before spring break

What to book in advance

  • Hotel Zone hotels: Book 4–6 weeks ahead in peak season; 1–2 weeks is fine in low season
  • Flights: 3–6 weeks ahead for best fares (exceptions: last-minute drops in low season)
  • Cenote and Chichén Itzá day trips: Book 1–2 weeks ahead in high season — they sell out
