Budget Europe Trips From the US in 2026 — Which Cities Are Actually Affordable

June 2, 2026 3 min read

The flight is the hard part. Once you're in Europe, your per-day costs vary wildly by city — and the cheapest European cities are genuinely cheaper than most US destinations. Here's the breakdown.

The flight reality

Transatlantic flights from the US to Europe typically run $450–$900 round-trip from major hubs. This varies enormously by:

  • Origin city: New York, Boston, Miami, and Atlanta have the most competition and cheapest fares
  • Destination: Lisbon, Dublin, and Reykjavik often have the cheapest transatlantic fares due to budget carrier routes
  • Season: Late January through March and October through November are significantly cheaper than summer
  • Budget carriers: Norse Atlantic, Play, and Level operate transatlantic routes at budget prices but charge for bags

Cheapest transatlantic routes right now (2026):

  • JFK/BOS → LIS (Lisbon): $380–$580 RT
  • JFK/EWR → DUB (Dublin): $420–$620 RT
  • EWR → BCN (Barcelona): $450–$650 RT
  • BOS/JFK → CDG (Paris): $480–$680 RT

European cities ranked by budget-friendliness

Cheapest: Under $70/person/day

Lisbon, Portugal — The single best value major European capital. Excellent food ($3 pastéis de nata, $12 sit-down dinners), cheap wine ($3 glass), affordable transit. A week here costs less than 3 nights in London.

Porto, Portugal — Smaller than Lisbon, even cheaper in spots. Famous for wine (port wine tastings $5–$10), river views, and tile-covered buildings.

Athens, Greece — Budget accommodation is plentiful, street food is cheap, and entry to most museums is reasonable. Beaches are 30 minutes from the city center by metro.

Budapest, Hungary — One of Europe's most underrated cities. Thermal baths ($12–$20), excellent cheap food, nightlife, and beautiful architecture. Cheapest city on this list for accommodation.

Mid-range: $70–$120/person/day

Barcelona, Spain — More expensive than Lisbon but still excellent value. Tapas culture keeps food costs manageable. Accommodation in the Eixample or Gracia neighborhoods is cheaper than the tourist center.

Rome, Italy — Museums are pricier than you'd expect, but street food (supplì, pizza al taglio) is $3–$6. The Vatican can be a budget-buster if you book tours through resellers — go directly.

Amsterdam, Netherlands — More expensive than it used to be, but still manageable. Cook your own food using the Albert Heijn grocery chain. Canal house Airbnbs are often better value than hotels.

Expensive: $120–$200+/person/day

London — Expensive but flights are competitive from the US, and free museums (British Museum, V&A, Tate Modern) keep daytime costs lower than you'd expect. Food and accommodation are the killers.

Paris — Gets a bad rap for cost but is roughly comparable to London. Wine is cheaper, bread is cheaper, a crêpe from a street stall is $3. The problem is hotel prices — go for a 4th/5th arrondissement hotel or well-reviewed Airbnb.

Zurich / Copenhagen / Oslo / Stockholm — Genuinely expensive cities. Beer costs $12–$16. A sit-down dinner easily runs $40–$60/person. Beautiful, worth visiting once, but not budget destinations.

The cheapest Europe trip structure from the US

Best combination for under $1,500 all-in (7 nights, from East Coast):

  1. Fly into Lisbon (LIS) — often the cheapest transatlantic fare
  2. Base yourself in Lisbon for 4 nights (~$60–$80/night hostel or budget hotel)
  3. Day trip to Sintra ($15 round-trip train) and Cascais (beach, free)
  4. Take a $35 train to Porto for the last 3 nights
  5. Fly home from Porto or Lisbon

Total: $480 flight + $420 accommodation + $400 food/activities = $1,300 all-in

What to book early for Europe

  • Flights: 2–4 months ahead for summer travel; 6–8 weeks for shoulder season
  • Popular museums: Uffizi Gallery, Vatican Museums, Sagrada Família — book online weeks in advance or pay premium day-of prices
  • City Cards: Most major European cities have tourist cards (metro + museums) that save money if you plan to hit multiple museums
